How to Include Pets in Your Family Portrait Session
Bringing the Whole Pack: Yes, Your Dog Can Join Too
Ever tried to get a toddler and a golden retriever to sit still at the same time? It’s not exactly peaceful — but it is real, and often hilariously sweet.
One of my favorite moments happened during a newborn session when the family’s dog clearly wasn’t ready to give up the spotlight. He nudged his way into every frame, tried to lick the baby, stole the pacifier, and then flopped dramatically on the nursery rug like, “Remember me?” That dog was their first baby — and honestly, I kind of loved it.
So, if you’re wondering whether to include your pet in your upcoming family or newborn session, my answer is a resounding yes — with a little prep and a lot of grace. Let’s talk about how to make it a low-stress, enjoyable experience for everyone (including your furball).
Pets are Family Too - So Let’s Make Space for Them
Including your dog (or cat!) in family photos can feel unpredictable — and that’s okay. Pets don’t pose on cue, and they definitely don’t smile for the camera. But that’s not the goal. I’m not after a perfectly posed portrait. I’m here for the ear tilt, the goofy grin, the dog curled up at your feet during a family snuggle.
Like kids, pets do best when they can ease into the process. We don’t need them in every photo. They can pop in and out, take breaks, or get their photos done first and then relax.
If we get one great image of your family with your pup by your side? That’s a win.
Here’s how we make it work.
Tips for Including Pets in Your Bay Area Family Photos
1. Let Them Warm Up First
I always begin by entering your home calmly and quietly. Instead of jumping into work, I take a moment to sit on the floor and let your pet come to me. If they want to sniff me, jump up on me, or give me kisses… I’m all in. This helps build trust and makes the rest of the session easier.
I bring treats and gently introduce my camera by letting them see or even sniff it.
Some overly protective pups get nervous about seeing a big camera pointed at their people. Easing in helps.
2. Don’t Expect Perfection
It’s OK if your dog looks the wrong way, steals a toy, or flops around mid-photo. I actually love those in-between moments. It’s real life, and it often leads to the most memorable images.
We’ll aim to capture your pet interacting naturally - jumping on the couch, laying across your feet, licking your toddler’s face.
If we catch one frame where everyone is together and semi-looking in the same direction, we’ll take it!
3. Have a Few Pet Essentials Handy
Just like we prepare for diaper changes and snack breaks, it helps to be ready for whatever your pet might need too.
Bring treats - lots of them.
If we’re shooting outside, be sure to have a leash (and know the park or beach rules).
A favorite toy or blanket can help them settle, especially in a new setting.
4. Set Reasonable Expectations
You don’t need your pet in every single photo. We’ll get a few great ones early on, then give them space. They can nap, wander around, or stay with someone else for a bit.
If possible, have a helper on hand to leash-walk or take the pet home after they’ve had their photo moment.
If we’re in your home, let’s give them a cozy retreat area once they’ve had enough.
5. Trust That I Love Animals Too
You don’t need to apologize if your dog jumps up on me or your cat meows for more back scratches. I’ve had pets my whole life and can’t imagine living without them.
Bay Area Locations That Are Great for Dog-Friendly Family Sessions
Want to bring your dog to your family session? Here are a few of my favorite spots:
Crissy Field – with the Golden Gate Bridge in the background, soft sand, and open space for dogs to run
Baker Beach – more iconic views of the Golden Gate Bridge and plenty of space to roam
Fort Funston – dog paradise with trails, dunes, and off-leash areas
Montara Beach - A gorgeous beach for dogs and surfers
Poplar Beach - A favorite spot in Half Moon Bay
Golden Gate Park - let’s find a nice grassy area, like Hellman Hollow
Your Home – the easiest place for pets to feel relaxed and natural
Why Including Pets Tells Your Whole Story
For many families, pets are the heart of home life. They’re there for the morning chaos, the cuddles, the mess, and the magic. Including them in your photos just makes sense.
Years from now, your kids will remember the dog who followed them from room to room or the cat who never missed a nap spot. These photos become little time capsules — not just of how your family looked, but what life felt like.
